Open source field surveying and excavation software

Survey2GIS is an open source field survey and excavation software. It is a compact software solution that enables the continuous conversion of topographic survey data from GPS devices or total stations into attributed geometry data. It therefore provides an important building block for generating archivable documentation data in accordance with the FAIR principles. Survey2GIS thus serves as a link between the digital documentation activities in the field and the subsequent GIS-based processing and analysis of the primary data. Geometric data such as points, lines and polygons from survey results can be easily generated with Survey2GIS and exported in formats such as Shapefile, GeoJSON and KML. Different input formats are taken into account by a flexible parsing scheme and, in addition to command line commands, a GUI can also be used for simple configuration and use of the software, including a memory function for user settings.

The software is open source and can be downloaded here. The entire source code can be viewed and is available on GitHub. Survey2GIS will be continuously developed to further improve its functions and format support as well as its user-friendliness. In the future, Survey2GIS will be available as a QGIS plugin in addition to the stand-alone version. The necessary transformation steps will be realised with the support of the State Office for Monument Preservation in the RPS Stuttgart and NFDI4Objects.
