IANUS RDM recommendations
Efficient organization of personal research data is not only the basis for the success of a scientific project, but also a prerequisite for the smooth archiving and subsequent provision of data in accordance with the open science paradigms and principles established in science.
The IANUS Research Data Management Recommendations provide hints, tips and best practice examples for handling research data, with a focus on data organization, data management, data formats, description with metadata, conversion, etc.. They should therefore also be seen as a preparatory source of information for archiving data in the IANUS long-term archive and research data center.
The IANUS FDM recommendations focus on the domain-specific requirements of the disciplines represented in the NFDI4Objects community and thus on research data that are generated when using corresponding methods and technologies that are not only archaeology-specific or object-related - from excavation documentation, geodesy and terrain modeling to special photo documentation methods.
After the compilation of the information was started a few years ago as part of a cooperation project between various institutions, the IANUS FDM recommendations are being expanded as part of NFDI4Objects into a certified and therefore permanent NFDI4Objects service. The core of the concept is to open up the recommendations to the community in a repository for joint editing so that they can be continuously expanded and updated by the respective experts in a comprehensible manner.
To avoid duplication, reference is made to the content of other qualified information resources where possible and appropriate in order to focus on the domain-specific requirements.
The IANUS FDM recommendations support the researcher by providing information on:
- data management/data management plan
- Documentation, structuring and storage of metadata
- File management/file storage
- File naming
- Version control
- File storage and backup
- File formats (text, images, audio/video, GIS, 3D/VR, etc.)
- FDM for specific research methods (geodesy, surface and terrain modeling, etc.).
