NFDI4Objects will be present at the SODa Forum on May 8, 2025, 2:00-3:30 PM

At the SODa Forum on May 8, 2025, 14:00-15:30, the topic will be Rethinking conservation and restoration documentation together – ontology development in dialogue.

How do we document conservation and restoration measures today - and how do we want to do it in the future?

We would like to discuss this question with you at the SODa Forum on May 8, 2025. The focus will be on the presentation and discussion of a joint, still very young project of SODa and NFDI4Objects/Task Area 4 “Protecting”: The joint development of a generic ontology for conservation and restoration processes based on the international standard model CIDOC CRM.

The documentation of conservation and restoration measures is as complex as it is indispensable - for the preservation, research and sustainable use of our cultural heritage. Advancing digitization is opening up new ways of overcoming challenges in documentation - challenges that can hardly be mastered with traditional analogue or purely local methods: for example, the precise recording and long-term storage of condition reports, the seamless traceability of interventions and measures over years or decades, or the efficient management and linking of large volumes of heterogeneous data from different sources, formats and media. In this context, ontologies offer a promising tool: they enable a uniform, structured and semantically precise description of complex facts - and thus make an important contribution to the further development of documentary standards in the field of cultural heritage.

We cordially invite you to discuss ideas, modeling approaches and perspectives with us - and to contribute your practical experience!
